The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories Algernon Blackwood Books
This book contains ten delicious little ghost stories, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.First is "The Empty House." Summoned by his Aunt Julia, Jim Shorthouse agrees to spend the night with her in a haunted house to provide the sane courage she feels she needs to be able to complete her quest. They arrive at the house in the dark of night and check it out from basement to upper level to be sure no one is inside. Fingers fumbling for matches, walking "arm in arm" while "holding the dripping candle and the stick," flickering candle light, drafts ... filtered moonlight, scenes draped in shadows, scurrying black beetles, agonized screams of terror, ... you get the picture! Aunt Julia was not disappointed! The author was able to bring me right into the scene, and I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style. As an example, he writes as part of his description of the dark, empty house: "And it was dreary enough in all conscience, for there is nothing more desolate in all the abodes of men than an unfurnished house dimly lit, silent, and forsaken, and yet tenanted by rumour with the memories of evil and violent histories." (pg 11)
The second story, "A Haunted Island," takes place on a small, secluded island in a large Canadian lake in late September. The reader becomes an invisible witness to an act of terror and murder which takes place in the two-story cottage on the island. I got drawn into the story so much that it was hard not to hold my breath during the terror of the climax scene. All of my senses got involved!
All of these stories drew me in and made me feel like I was right there in the room witnessing the events along with the characters. This would be a great book to read while wrapped up in a blanket and cozying up to a fire on a cold, rainy night, . . . late . . . when it's dark . . . and when everyone else is asleep!

This may not be the best book I have ever read, but I really liked the stories and the author's writing style. The stories are works of fiction, but the author knows how to draw the reader into the story. I am definitely keeping this one on my Kindle!

The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories Algernon Blackwood Books Reviews
These are the first stories of Algernon Blackwood I've ever read. Most of the authors I prefer, like this one, are of the 19th or early 20th centuries when readers expected more out of English prose. Blackwood does not disappoint here. His "Haunted Island", for example, depicts loneliness very powerfully a cabin on a remote Canadian island, recently shared with lots of friends and now newly deserted by all but the first-person narrator. He can still hear the echoes of laughter and the sight of smiling, familiar faces "haunting" the many rooms that now stand so silent for him as he remains behind ... until, of course, the real ghosts show up.
Still, as much as I enjoyed Blackwood's literary skills and story-telling charms and as much as I agree with the other fully positive reviews, something remains missing for me there are no real spiritual, metaphysical or theological suggestions or implications. "The Wood of the Dead" teased me as the story unfolded but it never quite got there. Other writers certainly have given us such stories. C. S. Lewis' "That Hideous Strength", the novels of Charles Williams, the short stories of Russell Kirk, and my favorite, Robert Hugh Benson's "The Mirror of Shallot" and "The Light Invisible" are all excellent examples. Blackwood is one very fine writer of tales of the preturnatural bent who can build mental images and psychological suspense as a true master of the art. But if you are looking for something more, for intimations of meaning dimly discerned in those extraordinary moments when "the other side" reaches out to touch our "ordinary" world, then you may want to look elsewhere.
Have you seen a photo of Algernon Blackwood? He looks like the quintessential suspense and ghost story writer. He had an amazing career and was prolific. It has been said he was often paid by the word and that draws a comparison for me to Stephen King. This collection published in 1916 is great fun and in several instances quite chilling. The Empty House is both familiar and unique. He makes its emptiness a creepy character and curiously labels the malevolence "IT".
In a few of the tales his recurring character Shorthouse appears. The BBC should do up a series on him getting into paranormal shenanigans. The most interesting ones were those influenced by the author's hunting trips in Quebec. As a resident of Mont Tremblant I can imagine the scenes of nature he pens with ease. I have downloaded more of his work because it is free (I am a frugal Winnipeg boy) and because it entertains.
Blackwood is a master of the ghost tale, a master at creating eerie environments and taking the reader on a weird and a sometimes wild ride. He does not use gore but you are still creeped out by the stories and that is why I like these old tales. I am a fan of these kinds of stories. Sometimes the language can be a bit old fashioned and they are not for the most part, action packed, just a slow revelation of oddness that can give you a bang at an unexpected twist of the story. His characters go camping, visit their old Aunties, go on strange trips for their employers, etc. I will continue reading everything I can find by this author. If you have never read Algernon Blackwood, I recommend you start with his tale, The Willows. To me it is a classic tale of what this author is all about.
One's only regret in reading these stories are that they are in fact short stories. Some end abruptly and one wishes they would continue and, at least be novellas. The mastery of the genre is clear within each of these stories. With a relative economy of words, the authors manage to create complete atmospheres, plots, and characters. I will most likely read them again at some later dayr. They were that enjoyable!
