A new suspense thriller by #1 bestselling author Robert Stanek! The first book in the series, The Pieces of the Puzzle, was an instant Top 10 Mystery Bestseller and a #1 Fiction Bestseller in Audio. Now former NSA agent turned rogue operative Scott Madison Evers is back in an all new action thriller.
Still a man on the outside looking in, Scott Evers is working security onboard the Sea Shepherd, an Island class vessel performing fishery protection patrols in the Mediterranean Sea. No, Scott Evers hasn’t become an environmentalist. He’s about as far from the pie-in-the-sky happy people he has sworn to protect as any person could ever be. But he’s got a job to do. Namely, to keep the yuppies from doing stupid things that will get them killed.
With tensions heating up in the Mediterranean Sea and with terrorists afoot, Scott’s an instant away from everything going as terribly wrong as he fears. When the dust clears, his world will never be the same again.

I am not really sure how to review this because it appears to be a new way of selling a book. I don't particularly care for this new approach but I am not sure giving a poor ranking would be fair to the book. The 38 pages was an interesting tease but it doesn't warrant 5 stars. What was in this "book" was interesting. However, there is no complete story in here. As I said in the title, this is most similar to a preview. I have not read the "second" in this series yet because it is only 80 pages long. It appears the author is taking a book/story and publishing parts of it at a time. So far it doesn't look like this story has been finished yet as I can only find part two and judging by the number of pages per part I am guessing it is going to take 5 books to actually tell this story.
For me it is bad enough waiting for parts 2 and 3 of a good trilogy but at least in that form of publishing, there are complete stories in each book and the trilogy tells the complete tale. This form of publishing has you waiting just to read the one story. I would recommend waiting until this book is actually complete before starting to read it.

Devil Due The Cards in the Deck #1 edition by Robert Stanek Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
First in the series, short cliff hanger style well written military thriller that builds action and interest with every turn of the page. If there were any indie grammar issues, I roared right past them following the storyline.
This is a well crafted short work. I was thrilled to be hooked on the main character almost immediately and couldn't put it down until the end. It totally intrigued me.
Mr Stanek you didn't disappoint in the least. You did leave me desperate to find out what happened.
I would highly recommend this little thriller gem. It will leave you with many questions and wanting more.
Devil's Due is the first installment in the Cards in the Deck. It's a fast, exciting read telling the story of a former operative for the NSA named Scott Evers who's working security aboard a ship in the Med. His partner/love interest is Edie, who is also working security on the ship. Really good read from a really great author and left me hungry for the second one.
This is a Mac Bolan type of story with a Navy Seal type dude who is your general bad-a$$, dropped in to battle aboard his Navy ship where he battles terrorists in the hot-spot du jour. If you want that then this is the book for you. I thought it was good, but since I've read so much of this type stuff, I'm always looking for some new twist.
I don't like the idea of being cut off in mid-thought, only to learn that I have to purchase a second book that would carry-on the thought. I'm glad this book is over as I have others to consider.
I really hate these books that you get the first one free but it's only the beginning of the story. As with this one ,in order to read the complete story you have to buy three more books, the first book leaves you without and type of ending!!! NO THANKS!!!
It rates two stars only because the writing was fairly good. No pretense of a complete story and that would have earned only one star except that it could have been a good, though shallow, tale.
Very stereotypical characters, doing shoot-em-up action and then the story just ends when it's possibly going to get rolling.
Short stories are fine, but any story needs to be complete and stand alone. This isn't.
