I wasn't sure if I would like this collection, but I thought I'd give it a try as it sounded good. I'm glad I did. It starts out a little slow but hastens as you get into the book. I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. This series is one I will read again and again.

I loved the main characters, they were relatable and easy to connect to. They felt like real people. I especially loved Maria. Digger and Hilda's relationship is heartwarming. This all in the backdrop to a search for gold and keeping the gold found from those who want to take it.

I would definitely recommend the bundle as then you can read one book after the other. I liked this series so much, at over 1000 pages, I read it over the weekend.

I like getting bundles like this rather than one book at a time because if I finish one and want to keep reading I can with no delay! I did want to keep reading this one and when I read that it was the first non-Steinbeck novel accepted into the National Steinbeck Center Resource Library I understood why. Mitchell's writing is descriptive, taut and colorful without being overdone. The books all have a good plot and are written about an interesting time in this world's not-too-distant history.

The book starts with California prospector Nolen Martin who discovers a huge vein of gold that no one else saw. He's got to file his claim on this fortune-maker, but will he stay alive long enough? A major vein of gold would totally change the nature of the area and there are obviously some people out there who don't want this to happen. The author is a foster son and this book has a relationship with a foster son at its center. The second book, Gold Vein, has people who would normally be friends tearing at each other's throats The knowledge that there's a huge vein of gold has brought out the worst in everyone. Now, Martin has a fiancee and international criminals after him.

The books progressed in time in their publishing date and the content changed as well. In the third one, a son of Osama Bin Laden plays a leading role. This moves the book squarely into the global terrorism theater with nuclear warheads involved. Martin has become a respected Senator now that the bravery he displayed in book 2 has become known and he now has a wife and baby. To ramp up the drama in the third book, the baby might not make it because no one knows how to cure her rare disease. Over the course of the three books, the characters became very well developed and it believably moved the action off the small town scale to the global scale. For fans of thrillers, political drama and successful business people who stare down their odds and succeed no matter what, you have a hard time finding a better book.
The Gold Lust series has a very unique story line. The flow from one book to the other is a smooth transition. There is was never a moment that I said “what is going on here?” When I first read the summary I though the Gold Rush of 1848 but this story is written as if it was going on right now or in the short future. The relationship duos are organized and structured well. Nolan and Miada, a new globe trotting relationship that is full of thrilling exciting places and the danger of the chase makes for great chemistry. Digger and Hilda, a old heart warming love relationship. One that is molded by experience and age.
In Gold Lust, the book is about Nolan and Digger searching for the gold, finding the gold and protecting it from a dangerous corporation of thugs and the FBI. The reason for this chaos is paying for cancer treatments for Digger’s wife Hilda. But some are worried about how finding this gold will affect the area. What kind of secrets does this gold hide. And those who will go to great lengths to keep them.
In Gold Raid, Nolan and now fiancee Miada are trying to protect their vein of gold from those they thought they could trust like family to those who seek to pulverize them like the Japanese Mafia. What I like about this book is that it is more detailed about the surroundings, the people, animals and emotions. The cat and mouse thriller vibe kept me at the edge of my seat and turning the pages to see what happened next.
In Gold Fire, Nolan and now wife Miada have a little girl who has a unique life threatening disease. And Nolan is now Senator Martin. Between finding help for his little girl and controlling the country Nolan is under a lot of stress. Meanwhile the son of Obama Bin Laden has threatened the world with missiles and Senator Nolan is wanted for treason for trying to negotiate with him. Time is running out. In this last installment of the series the plot twists, the spy game and the technological jargon has really escalated the story line. I like how the characters are all believable. I can relate to them by seeing myself in their roles and accepting the challenges that they face. Even though this is a series I can honestly say that these books are very stand alone books also. Each one very different from the other but still very connected. I believe that the readers who likes a good spy-like story line will also enjoy this book. I look forward to reading more from Ed Mitchell and his exclusive creative writing technique.
