At the outset, this book is a children's classic, and it was authored (presumably) with good intentions. It's artwork is colorful and exciting for children. Given that I have traveled to quite a few international locales with my 5 year old, we were able to pick out landmarks, etc., that we had seen in person.

But the book is hugely Eurocentric, especially Northern/Western European. It spends a huge chunk of the book going on a country-by-country ethnic stereotyping tour of the Nordic and Western European countries. Being of Nordic descent, at first this was entertaining, but when I realized that the book spends almost zero time covering South America, Africa, or Asia, I became disappointed. It also has a bad habit of depicting women as nagging wives.

And speaking of stereotyping -- whoa. What may have passed as "tongue-in-cheek" punny naming of characters when this book was written is largely unacceptable today. A student who wrote stories like these in school would likely be disciplined.

The bottom line is that the book is the same as it ever was -- but it has aged badly. There is nothing malicious or mean spirited in the book, but its narrow and stereotype-filled worldview is one that the West has since progressed past.

Richard Scarry Busy Busy World Golden Bestsellers Series Richard Scarry 9780307655394 Books Reviews

My 4.5 year old son LOVES this book. There are so many cute stories in this book that we don't have to read the same stories every night (although there are several that are his favorite that we must read over and over again). I am sure this will be one of his favorite books from his childhood as his grows older. Timeless stories, class Richard Scarry characters and graphics. Awesome book!
I am okay with the removal of the politically incorrect stories as I don't remember this book as a child. The pictures and character names are great, but I feel that some of the stories are a little lackluster or just plain silly. It leads me to believe that Scarry is best at lots of pictures and labels with a shorter narration through the story - Car & Trucks and BusyTown are our favorites. Still good for a big Richard Scarry fan, but not on the top of my list.
50th Anniversary printing re-release of the original! Out of print for many years (my old copy from my childhood, was barely holding on) I happened on this 50th anniversary printing (July 14, 2015) Both 'What do People Do all Day' and this one were my favorite years ago; and neither was available (this) or in unabridged state (Do all day) what a treat to be able to share both of my memories with my family! Make sure the description says 96 pages (both) and enjoy. Truly a wonderful book to share with your children.
This is one of my daughter's favorite books. And one of mine. Each story is short and a bit silly (typical Richard Scarry). But the book takes us around the world to tell these stories. My almost 3 year old daughter picks a story by looking at the map at the front of the book. So from that, she's starting to learn where these places are. And the illustrations within many of the stories show key city landmarks. The other day, we were talking about Paris. She went to get her book to show us the Eiffel Tower in the Paris story. I love to travel and hope to raise explorers. I think this book is helping.
Richard Scarry's illustrations are timeless and delightful. I have started buying a lot of Richard Scarry books as gifts for children (other people's and my own) and they usually end up becoming favorites. This book is large and there are many illustrations on each page. For very young children, this is a great book to talk about the names of objects and animals, colors, etc. Older children will like that the book contains various different stories. And reading age children will be able to read the stories on their own. Therefore I think this is a book that a child would enjoy for many years. I bought this as a gift for a 3 year old, but it would be a great purchase for a child from babyhood through Pre-K.
This isn't an objective review because I grew up loving Richard Scarry and had to buy this book more for myself than for our toddler, who at 20 months is way too young to appreciate its awesomeness. But he does. He yells "Mummy read big book!" and although some of the stories defy truncation, we do our best to come up with simplified versions of them. The book is pulled out so often that it will be in shreds by the time he's old enough to realize how politically incorrect it is ...
This is a collection of stories about characters from Paris, London, and further flung locales that are very entertaining for myself and for my daughter. It's extra cool to show her photos of me and her dad in some of these cities and then see the cartoon version of the same landmarks here! As usual, the artwork is very detailed and holds the attention of any child, and the stories are short enough but interesting enough to keep her begging for "just one more" story. Nice large format with tons of tales. This one will provide entertainment for years to come.
