Such a splendid ending of a grand series! So often authors slide with the final book of a series but there was no slipping with this one. I was nervous when I pre-ordered this novel ~ it sounded a little lackluster but boy, was I in for a happy surprise! This novel is superb.Throughout the series we've known that George Crabbe, Duke of Stanbrook had suffered but we had no idea the extent of his suffering. It's revealed in this story. Then we have our heroine, Dora Debbins a rather plain, 39-year-old music teacher. Before the book's release, I thought gah, can there possibly be a more boring heroine? Wrong. She was wonderful and perfect for George. And Dora had troubles from her past that she had to work through too.
This was a beautiful novel, beautifully written, and with much more depth than most HRs. It's my favorite.....except for my other favorites in this series. LOL
Enjoy your reading! ::) (You'll love this one.)

Only Beloved A Survivors' Club Novel Mary Balogh 9780451477781 Books Reviews
I have enjoyed the entire Survivor series, but this one is special. This could, I suppose, be read as a stand-alone, but if you haven't read at least a couple of books in this series, you won't fully understand just how satisfying this story is ~ George finds love at last!
George is a kind and deeply compassionate man, who after losing his son to war and his wife to suicide, opens his home up to wounded veterans. Over the years he has helped all seven of the 'survivors' back to health, and helped them to forge new and happy lives. But now George is alone, lonely and left behind with no one to care for ~ enter Dora, sister-in-law to one of his survivors. Having met her before and admired her quiet, mature nature, he decides to take a leap of faith. He pays Dora a visit and feeling in his heart that she would make an admirable wife, he proposes marriage.
Dora was at heart a sensible woman. After her mother abandoned the family when Dora was seventeen, Dora gave up her come-out, and indeed her life, to raise her five year old sister. When Dora was thirty, her father remarried, and she gave up her home to live in a small village, teaching piano and harp for her livelihood. Dora's life was content, but small. She did occasionally have thoughts of George, who had impressed her with his kind nature. When he appears out of the blue to propose marriage, it's her turn to take a leap of faith, so she accepts.
Their story of slowly growing affection and love was so beautiful. This was literally George's first courtship, and he was so tentative and earnest in his need to be loved, as though he were a young man again. Dora blossomed under his attentions, becoming quietly prettier to him every day. They do have problems along the way, both from outside forces and from George's inability to fully open himself up to Dora, but in the end, love prevails. The epilogue was terrific, and gave us a chance to catch up with all of the survivors, wrapping this series up in a very satisfying way.
Ah, George... He isn't as sweet as Vincent, nor as charming as Flavian. He doesn't have Hugo's raw, masculine sexuality, but he's still the total package. Plus he's a good guy, always trying to comfort and put others at ease. He's got polished looks and manners, and the sex appeal of a handsome, well preserved, older gentleman. If such a thing weren't totally embarrassing, I might confess to falling a little bit in love with him.
My only complaint is that it was a little light on the steamy love scenes. I know there are a lot of readers these days writing to authors complaining about the presence of sex scenes in romance novels and writing reviews complaining about sexual content. Perhaps M. Balogh simply feels less inclined to write them. Whatever the case may be, I'd just like to cast my vote as being pro-sex in romance novels- not excessive, but this book was pretty much at the minimum without being a total disappointment. It would be nice if authors could offer two versions of the same story one clean and explicit, but I guess that's something that would have to implement first.
Lastly, I would recommend not reading this book without reading the others first. It CAN be read as a standalone, but shouldn't. You miss too much of the important detail of the story in doing so.
