This book was even better than I expected. I LOVE Neely Kate- seriously- we all need a NK in our lives!! But reading “her” side… I don’t know the author does it. I am completely drawn into every single (main) character in this series. Getting to see inside Neely Kate was just icing on the top of an already incredible series. And Jed?? Oh my, JED. LOVE Jed… and even more after reading this! Great job Denise Grover Swank!While this is the first of the ‘Neely Kate’ series… there are many previous books in the entire Rose Gardner series. I do recommend reading the other books as opposed to jumping in right here. If you are confused (because there are a few novellas thrown in there as well) go to the author’s website and see the order of how you should read them. You won’t regret it, I promise. And you can blame me when your eyes are blood-shot from staying up late reading them all. (But don't blame me for your bank account after you keep hitting "buy now" on your e-reader!!) These books are really good. There is mystery, romance, action, drama… at times you will find your mouth hanging open, shocked at what happened and other times your heart will be breaking for whatever character you are reading about. I can hardly wait until the next book!

Neely Kate is a vivacious and strong woman who has become Rose Gardner's best friend. They are also coworkers and roommates and have solved several crimes and taken down some major bad guys. So far all of the adventures have surrounded Rose. Now it's time for Neely Kate's story to be told. With all of the fallout from the last year, Neely Kate has decided it's time to dig up the past and deal with it so she heads back to Oklahoma. She doesn't tell anyone where she's going. She is ashamed of her past and doesn't want to involve family (including Rose) for fear they will turn away from her. To her surprise, and dismay, Skeeter Malcolm's right had man, Jed, chooses to back her up. He's second in command of the criminal underworld and has done and seen things that should be left unspoken. This puts him in a unique position to help Neely Kate without her fearing judgment. It sure doesn't hurt that he is Hot! Hot! Hot! and head over heals for her. Together they go back and face a time in her past that consisted of shame, pain, loss, and betrayal.
I love Denise's writing and the Rose Gardner series in particular so I was excited to hear this was coming. I sure wasn't expecting it to blow me away! I will never look at Neely Kate the same way again. Denise has taken a secondary character and given her depth and life. I am grateful that she chose to make this a full novel instead of the intended novella. I'll be waiting for the second book in this series and am hoping she doesn't take to long to get it written!
My true rating is 2.5 stars because I truly am on the fence about this. I wanted to love NK story, I waited on pins and needles for it and to see how her story would evolve with Jed, whom I adore and I loved the tension/chemistry between these two in the Rose series, however in this one I did not feel they were remotely as I have known these characters from the other series. They felt different, they just seemed "off" and I felt disconnected from them. NK even expressed herself differently and I only saw a glimpse of the NK I've loved in less than a handful of scenes. There is one more thing really bothering me as well and this goes for the Rose series too, NK and Rose love one another like sister's yet at every turn on the most important aspects of their lives that matter, they shut one another out. It's a contradiction to me and I can't imagine professing my love, trust and loyalty to anyone and turn around and do the opposite constantly. That's not true love and friendship to me. I really hope that this does not become a long series because I love the Rose series and I feel the characters should stay where they are and continue their jourmey as they have, keeping it ongoing with the Rose series vs multiple spin offs.
I really have a hard time writing reviews for books by Denise Grover Swank that I just love. I feel like I can't do the book justice and I don't want people to think I'm just blowing smoke at them because she's one of my favorite authors. I don't want to be like all the other rave reviews and just gush about the book and how awesome it is. So, I will try to do something different.
Neely Kate Colson from the Rose Gardner Mysteries books has gotten her own story. It's a good thing, too because this chick has a LOT of baggage and issues. She has stories upon stories of drama and history that haven't been told. No one knows all of her past, including her best friend Rose Gardner. She is trying to keep her past from coming into her new life and ruining what peace she has. However, it's not working very well when her half-sister is sending her malicious mail with hints to her past.
The Rose Gardner series is one of my absolute favorite series of all time. I have been a fan since I first read Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes and met quirky, meek Rose Gardner and her misfit friends and family. There was something about her that resonated with me. Maybe I saw in her a kindred spirit, one that recognizes that their life could be more if only they just broke free from their constraints. Whatever it was, I was a fan of it. I also liked Neely Kate when I met her. She seemed to be the cool, wild, rebellious side of Rose. I liken her to the little devil on Rose's shoulder. Not that she causes her to get into trouble, more like she helps get Rose thinking about the not-so-safe kind of life. She doesn't instigate the trouble but she definitely doesn't help keep Rose out of it.
There is something that happens when Ms.Swank writes her stories. She seems to write these characters that are 3-dimensional. When reading, you develop a relationship with them, albeit one-sided,and genuinely care about what happens to them. They feel like your friend from grade school that you did everything with and you told all your secrets to. You feel their hurt when something tragic happens; you feel happiness at their proud moments; and you fret and worry over all the monsters and demons that they face. It's something that a lot of authors try to do but very few actually make happen. If you haven't read a Denise Grover Swank book, you are sorely missing out on an experience that is unlike anything else you've ever read.
