I loved this gritty, gripping and compelling rock star romance. It felt real.

Before you read this novel, I recommend you read the FREE 3000 word prequel “Ice Queen Origins.” Well, it’s more a prologue and it gives great background and context for heroine Rielle, and her brother Rand who go on to become the rock-stars in the band “Ice Queen” in GETTING REAL.

Rielle is one bad girl. Complex, damaged and wild. She tests all limits: music artistry, stage presence, professional and personal relationships. She is tough, demanding, uncompromising. And yet she is capable of loving deeply - and she is toughest on herself.

Along comes normal, boy next door Jake. He’s a respected, sensible roadie/tour manager. From the moment they meet, Rielle rocks his world. Another character contemptuously describes him as “just a roadie.” But he emerges as so much more.

The romance hurts and the love (and sex) is put through the toughest tests. Towards the end, I was on the edge of my seat.

By contrast, Rielle’s brother Rand experiences his own beautifully written romance within this book. His romance seems natural and sunny. Its sweetness is a relief for a reader feeling shaken and stirred by Rielle and Jake.

In the mix you get ample cheeky Australian roadie humour for many laugh out loud moments. It was great to inhabit the exhausting and exhilarating rock world for a while as a reader. What a rush. I just wish there was an epilogue for this novel.

This was an amazing reading experience. I recommend it.

I couldn't put this book down. It is well worth the read. Keep writing these amazing books!
A good chunky read with a big cast. Love me some roadie humour. Didn't see the end coming. Well worth the time. The scene with the moths is a crack up.
What I liked about Getting Real was the fact the two lead characters both have problems but they heal themselves. It's not like some gigantic ball of love suddenly makes everything right for them, they do the work.
Oh my God there is a sex fail scene. It's all heat and build up between Jake and Rielle and then they lose it once they hit the bedroom because of lack of trust. It's heartbreakingly real. I couldn't put it down I had to know if they'd try again and get it right.
Getting real is fast paced, edgy and intense. It is a vision of today by a writer who has obviously researched her subject. Arielle - a rock princess who is only too real, too vulnerable. Jake, the kind of guy everyone should have in their lives. A great love story, it made me cry...
This story tips the tradition of rock romances on its head. It's the heroine who is the mega star and the hero is surprisingly a boy next door type. She's all rock chick hard and in control and he's all happy families soft and he's scared of heights. She thinks he's pathetic, until she realises he's not about the show but has inner strength - the very opposite of her. She's so screwed up, she's all about the show and scared to be herself.

It's refreshing to see the usual dynamic for a rock romance tipped on its head. It's usually the male who is the star and the female is the one running after him or holding him off.
I waited all week to order another of Paton's books. I read Grease Monkey Jive (twice! and I never read anything twice) last weekend and couldn't wait to order another one. This book was every bit as good as that one and the other 2 of Ms. Paton's that I've read. Wonderful characters that make the reader's heart ache and a plot that is completely character driven and never contrived. I'll read it again tomorrow and then probably download Detained.......or maybe I'll download Detained now!
