Brother Cadfael Herb Garden An Illustrated Companion to Medieval Plants and Their Uses Robin Whiteman Rob Talbot 9780821223871 Books
I've been wanting this book for at least over fifteen years but I just couldn't justify the full retail price to add it to my library. I fofund this copy for less than $5 and knew it was time to pull the trigger. If you are familiar with Cadfael and like herb gardens, I need say no more. This is THE reference book for the Cadfael herb garden. It's also invaluable for researching medieval herbalism (for instance if you're in the SCA).
It's a beautiful book with LOTS of additional information about the period, monasteries, and medieval medicine. If you have interests in these areas, do not hesitate to pick up a copy (especially a very fine used copy)

Brother Cadfael Herb Garden An Illustrated Companion to Medieval Plants and Their Uses Robin Whiteman Rob Talbot 9780821223871 Books Reviews
It's a lovely resource book on historical use of herbs, even if you haven't read the Cadfael books. Be sure to update their applications with current research.
I love the Cadfael series and also love sustainable gardening. I hoped this book would go deeper into medieval gardening practices (like Thomas Hill) or at least into more concrete information on how to use the medicinal herbs. For the price it should certainly have included more research and information; almost everything in here you could learn by just reading the series. This is more like fanfiction for Brother Cadfael, with lots of gorgeous photos. It's a great gift for someone who loves the series and knows nothing about plants! Not so helpful to an actual gardener.
I have enjoyed this book so much. Quick arrival.
for the medieval enthusiast. Brother Cadfel and his abbey are pure fiction but the research done for his garden are straight out of medieval history. If you want to know how to and what to do for medieval gardening this is the book for you! wonderfuL!
Was there ever another like Brother Cadfael? This absolutely gorgeous book shows the Shrewsbury Quest medieval herb garden Cadfael worked in. Alas, the town of Shrewsbury couldn't pull together enough to preserve this lovely place and it's closed to the public now. But the book has not only the glowing photographs but also a great deal of information on monastic medieval gardens. Well worth your while if you are at all interested in medieval or monastic gardens or Cadfael or the Marches, or herbs of any kind. Highly recommended. This is my second copy -- now I have one to keep close (chained to my library, if I carry the medieval theme out) and the other to lend.
Brother Cadfael's Herb Garden An Illustrated Companion to Medieval Plants and Their Uses
Don't be put off by negative reviews; in addition to being a gorgeous picture book, this volume is also a treasure trove of useful information on the medicinal and culinary uses of herbs. A wonderful introduction gives a history of herbs and gardens of the twelfth century, then the chapters go into detail about monastic gardens, Brother Cadfael's herbal kingdom and the superb A to Z index of the known herbs of the period.
Interspersed with the text are gorgeous photos of Wales, herbs, methods of storing them and much more. Also in sidebars we get a glimpse of related herbal lore straight from the pages of Ellis Peters' wonderful Cadfael Chronicles. What could be more wonderful for the Medievalist or Cadfael afficionado?
Highly recommended.
I have been wanting to find this title for quite some time; and now that I have it, is has not disappointed!
Not only is it the perfect follow up for a Cadfael fan, is a great resource to enhancing my garden knowledge.
Most of the plants noted in the wonderful Cadfael series are represented here--not just a window into the past,
but also illustrated and informative for use today! If you are a Cadfael fan, or even if you are not, this book is
a great starter for learning about useful herbs, how to identify them, and most of all, how they were used (medicinally),
then and now. I almost can't wait for the spring--to add some of these species to my own herb garden!
